Hurricane Lala's eyewall brushed the southern Big Island from about 30 miles offshore on 15 August. It never made landfall. Hawaii County's preliminary accounting put the damage at nearly $50 million, and Mayor Kimo Alameda said an updated estimate could approach $100 million. AccuWeather's modelled estimate of total damage and economic loss across Hawaii is $3 to 5 billion, a different and far broader measure.
