The greatest weather forecasting machine in the world holds up a $12.4 billion industry. Weather apps and airline routing. Farm advisories and energy traders. All of it runs on measurements the government takes and gives away free. Now large parts of it are being cut.

The cuts: Zeroes out NOAA Research entirely, all $649 million of it. Cuts the agency by $1.1 billion, about a fifth. Takes 41% from Fisheries and 57% from the Ocean Service. The line item that kills the weather labs is $95,095,000.

The instruments: $47,500,000 a year stops going to the regional ocean observing network, and the network stops with it. The budget's own words are "terminate IOOS Regional Observations."

The math: NOAA's own budget says its radar network prevents $8.9 billion a year in deaths, injuries and flight delays, and that NWS observations underpin an estimated $12.4 billion weather industry. The same budget saves $1,500,000 by cutting radar tower and radome maintenance.
